Friends of the Future Director, Dr John Cussans, looks at Generative AI and Arts Education: The Case of Fine Art.
In a talk presented at the Homo ex MachinAI conference in Athens in April 2024, John looked at the trend for using generative AI tools in increasingly hybrid teaching environments - and the impact this may have on creative teaching programs in Higher Education, particularly Fine Arts.
In it, he makes the case for the importance of Studio Practice and the 'habits of mind' that it generates - an essential component of the Fine Art program where he is Senior Lecturer at the University of Worcester

These habits of mind can clearly be aligned with the five steps to wellbeing endorsed by the NHS and is a demonstration of the link between creativity and health & wellbeing.
It is John's contention that these unique characteristics mean that fine art education is less likely to be transformed by generative AI tools than some other fields.
